Understanding Standard Deviation
How dispersed is your data?
Standard Deviation is a measure of the amount of variation or dispersion of a set of values. A low standard deviation indicates that the values tend to be close to the mean (expected value) of the set, while a high standard deviation indicates that the values are spread out over a wider range.
Sample Standard Deviation (s)
Used when your data is a sample of a larger population. We divide by N - 1 (Bessel's correction) to get a more accurate, unbiased estimate of the population standard deviation.
s = √ [ Σ (xi- μ)² / (N - 1) ]
Population Standard Deviation (σ)
Used when your data includes the entire population (every possible member). We divide by N.
σ = √ [ Σ (xi- μ)² / N ]
