How to Calculate LCM
Understanding the Least Common Multiple.
The Least Common Multiple (LCM) is the smallest positive integer that is evenly divisible by two or more numbers. It is incredibly useful for finding common denominators when adding or subtracting fractions.
Method 1: Formula using GCD
If you know the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of two numbers, you can easily find the LCM using the formula:LCM(a, b) = |a × b| ÷ GCD(a, b)
Method 2: Prime Factorization
Find the prime factors of each number. Multiply each prime factor the greatest number of times it occurs in any of the numbers.
Example for 12 and 18:
- 12 = 22 × 31
- 18 = 21 × 32
Highest powers: 22 × 32 = 4 × 9 = 36
