Understanding Body Fat

Your Body Fat Percentage separates your weight into two categories: Fat Mass and Lean Mass. Lean mass includes your bones, muscles, organs, and water weight.

The US Navy Method

This calculator uses the US Navy formula, which is considered one of the most accurate tape-measure methods available. It estimates your body density by comparing the circumference of your waist (and hips for women) against your neck.

  • Waist Measurement: Men should measure horizontally around the navel. Women should measure at the narrowest point of the waist.
  • Neck Measurement: Measure below the larynx (Adam's apple) sloping slightly downward at the front.
  • Hip Measurement (Women only): Measure around the widest part of the hips/buttocks.
