  • Bulk vs. Bagged Material

    Mulch and topsoil are typically distributed in either bulk (cubic yards) or bags (cubic feet). Bulk delivery is almost always more cost-effective for projects exceeding 2 cubic yards, while bagged material provides easier transport to inaccessible areas like backyards or steep slopes.

  • Standard Layer

    A 3-inch layer is the industry standard for weed suppression and moisture retention. Refreshing an existing bed usually requires only 1 to 2 inches.

    Play Area Safety

    Wood chips and play mulch should be installed at a depth of 6 to 9 inches to provide adequate impact absorption for playground safety.

  • Volume Formula

    Bulk Estimation Logic

    Yards = (Length × Width × Depth) ÷ 324

    Where Depth is in inches. This shortcut converts square footage and inches directly to cubic yards.

  • Professional Best Practices

    • Avoid 'Mulch Volcanoes' around tree trunks
    • Allow for 10-20% settling after rainfall
    • Use a tarp for bulk driveway deliveries
    • Edge beds before spreading for a clean look

    Settling & Aging

    Organic materials like cedar mulch or pine bark will decompose and settle by roughly 10% to 20% in the first few months. Always round up your estimate slightly to account for this natural compaction and material loss.
