  • Material Overview

    Gravel and aggregate are typically sold by weight (tons) or volume (cubic yards). One ton is approximately 2,000 pounds and covers significantly less volume than lighter materials like mulch. Calculating the exact tonnage prevents overpaying for delivery or stalling mid-project.

  • Density Standard

    Most crushed stone has a density of 1.4 tons per cubic yard. However, wet or exceptionally dense stone (like granite) can reach up to 1.5 - 1.6 tons per yard.

    Compaction Factor

    Loose gravel compacts by 20% to 30% once rolled. If your driveway needs a 4" finished depth, you should order 5" of loose material.

  • Material Formula

    Volume To Weight Logic

    Tons = [ (L × W × D) ÷ 27 ] × 1.4

    Where Depth (D) is converted from inches to feet (inches ÷ 12).

  • Popular Aggregate Grades

    • #57 Stone: For drainage and French drains
    • Crushed Run (ABC): Ideal for driveway bases
    • Pea Gravel: Decorative and play areas
    • Rip Rap: For erosion control on banks

    Usage Pro Tip

    Always order "Crushed Run" for any project requiring compaction (like a patio base). The mix of stone dust and 3/4" rock locks together, creating a surface that won't shift under pressure.
