How to Calculate GPA
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a number that represents the average value of the accumulated final grades earned in courses over time.
To calculate your GPA manually, follow these steps:
- Assign a point value to each letter grade (e.g., A = 4.0, B = 3.0).
- Multiply the grade point value by the number of credit hours for that course to get "Quality Points".
- Add up all the quality points for the semester.
- Add up all the credit hours for the semester.
- Divide the total quality points by the total credit hours.
Formula:
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) / ΣCredits
Grade Scale (4.0)
| Letter Grade | Point Value | Percentage (Typical) |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | 93-100% |
| A- | 3.7 | 90-92% |
| B+ | 3.3 | 87-89% |
| B | 3.0 | 83-86% |
| B- | 2.7 | 80-82% |
| C+ | 2.3 | 77-79% |
| C | 2.0 | 73-76% |
| F | 0.0 | < 60% |
Note: Grade scales can vary by institution. Some schools use a 5.0 scale or weighted scales for Honors/AP classes.
