Plate Estimator

For each wall, order linear footage = Length × 3to cover the bottom plate and double top plates.

  • Understanding O.C. (On Center)

    Always measure from the center of one stud to the center of the next. Standard 4x8 panels are designed to land halfway across a stud at 48 or 96 inches. If your spacing is off by even 1/2 inch, you will lack a nailing surface for your panel edges.

  • The "Crown Up" Rule

    Before nailing, sight down the length of each stud to identify the "crown" (the subtle curve). Always install studs with the crown facing the same direction throughout a wall to prevent unsightly waves in the finished drywall.

  • Core Framing Logic

    Estimation Equation

    Studs = ⌈ Length ÷ Spacing ⌉ + 1

  • California Corners

    Modern building science prefers "California Corners"-using three studs configured to create a drywall nailing surface while leaving the corner cavity open for insulation. Solid corner methods are discouraged as they cause energy loss.
